Engineered Wood Floor Sanding Proces

1. Assessment & Inspection
Before starting, you must check the thickness of the wear layer (the top layer of real wood).
2. Preparation
  • Clear the area: Remove all furniture and rugs.
  • Cleaning: Vacuum the floor to remove any debris.
  • Check for damage: Secure any loose boards and countersink protruding nails
  • 3. Sanding (The Core Process)
Sanding engineered wood requires a delicate touch. Use an orbital sander instead of a heavy drum sander to prevent removing too much wood.
    • Initial Sanding: Use a coarse grit (e.g., 60-grit) to strip the old finish and scratches.
    • Intermediate Sanding: Use a medium grit (e.g., 80-grit) to smooth out the grain.
    • Final Sanding: Use a fine grit (e.g., 100 or 120-grit) for a perfectly smooth surface.
    • Edging: Use an edge sander (edger) to reach corners and baseboards.
  • 4 Finishing (Sealing)
Apply a protective coating to lock in the look and protect the wood.
    • Polyurethane (Water-based ): Provides a durable, plastic-like shield.
    •  Oil: Gives a more natural, matte look and is easier to spot-repair later.
    • Buffing: Lightly sand (buff) between coats for a professional, smooth result.
    5. Curing
    • Allow the floor to dry and cure. Usually, you can walk on it in socks after 24 hours, but wait at least 72 hours before moving heavy furniture back.
